About THMS
THMS was originally established in 1996 to provide a neighbour mediation service, and whilst this still forms the bulk of our work with referrals coming from the Local Authority and other Social Landlords, we now also undertake other types of mediation and non-violent conflict resolution work. THMS is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee.
We provide mediation services to people experiencing problems with their neighbours, and to young offenders and their victims, as well as facilitating communication between large groups in conflict, e.g. young people who hang out on estates and the residents who live there, as well as conflicts between opposing groups of young people. We are developing mediation in junior schools as a result of requests for this service.
As well as running two training courses a year for new Volunteer Community Mediators and On-going Training for existing volunteers, we also provide training for community groups and other organisations.
We aim to achieve the Community Legal Service Quality Mark, and accreditation for our training programme and Volunteer Mediators within the next 18 months.
The Team
All of our services are delivered by Volunteers, who we train, support, supervise and co-ordinate. The Volunteers all live, work or study in Tower Hamlets. We currently have approximately 38 volunteer mediators. Most of the Management Committee members joined THMS as Volunteer Mediators, and bring a range of skills and experience to the organisation.
The paid staff team consists of 5 part-time employees: Co-ordinator (28 hours), Neighbour Mediation Caseworker (28 hours), Victim/Offender Mediation Co-ordinator (21 hours), Youth & Conflict Project Worker (28 hours), and the Office Manager (21 hours).
