Principles

All our work is based on the following principles. These principles highlight the transformative nature of the mediation process.

Impartiality and independence Mediators remain detached from the outcome of the mediation process; THMS is not affiliated to, nor has a stake in, any of the parties involved in the dispute.

Confidentiality Mediators do not disclose personal details or the content of any mediation session to outside agencies.

Choice in participation The parties decide whether the mediation process is the right choice for them at this time.

Non-judgemental approach Mediators do not judge who is in the right or in the wrong. Each party's experience is real for them and therefore valid.

Respect We appreciate that people have different approaches to life based on their experiences, backgrounds and beliefs. We respect and value difference and diversity of experience, and encourage everyone involved in the mediation process to respect THMS' commitment to making participation safe and inclusive for people from all sections of the community.

Outcomes

Empowerment Participants have the confidence to take control of the decision making process.

Clarity Parties achieve a clearer understanding of their situation. They are able to separate facts based on knowledge from their perception of the facts.

Responsibility Parties take ownership and responsibility for transforming the situation.

Options Parties are able to determine achievable solutions for their own situation.

Realistic Expectations The parties understand the benefits and possible pitfalls of the options they have generated.

Future Communication The parties are better able to communicate their needs to each other and to other people involved in the conflict.

Reduced Cost There is often a benefit in terms of the financial, emotional or time costs expended by the parties.
